MCDONALD'S MONOPOLY SCANDAL
1. McDonald's first started monopoly promotion in 1987. It's basis was simple: attaching monopoly pieces( has a piece of history , a true symbols of americana) to food, cartons and cups showing a monopoly property/prize.
2. One out of every four pieces would be small prize, like medium fries or soda, and a very few of the pieces would be significantly more valuable, such as a car or, with cash upto - $1 million dollars.
3. as long as everyone played fairly and attached the pieces. some could win each of the prizes and someone could not $1 million grand price.
4. Jerome Jacobson(Security officer) of simon marketing Inc. It's the company that gave promotions to the for McDonald's. His job is to carry the said pieces to the factories preparing cups and cartons, where the pieces would then attached to said items. But, before delivering the said pieces he would go to the private place( like airport bathroom) and steal the best pieces and reseal and deliver the rest.
5. His first steal 1989. But, not he don't redeem the pieces himself. Jacobson gave the piece($25000) to his step brother who shared a proceeds with him. By 1995 he was stealing most of the pieces having greatest value. and he started recruiting people who could but pieces for a percentage one cashed in.
6. One of the ways in which the FBI traced him, that in order to but the pieces with large prizes, and many of the biggest prize winners paid in advance before collecting their monopoly prizes.
7. Jacobson also at least in one situation gave away his $1 million price in 1995 when he sent the pieces for the St. Jude's children's hospital.
8. According to the rules of organization the prizes were supposed to be non-transferable, the McDonald's make exception in this case and awarded the cash to the hospital. This fraud has taken place across the country and the U.S mail was involved, the FBI had authority and they named it as "Operation Final Answer", in reference to another McDonald's promotion Jacobson whats to be a millionaire.
9. Finally, McDonald's agreed with the Bureau and continued the contest to enable agents who are the winners and who are don't gathered information though calls, records and other patterns before reaching their houses.
10. Jacobson felt guilty to the charge on 2002 and was sentenced to 3 Years and 1 Month in prison and had to return the $1 million dollars and McDonald's terminated their half million dollar contract with Simon Marketing Inc. Then, McDonald's launched a Flash-monopoly run with a cash prize of $10 million.
